Ice Bowl Donations

This year's Ice Bowl for LVDC will sponsor the Second Harvest Food Bank. I emailed them a few weeks back after I learned something about Food Banks and their donations. These charities actually do better with cash donations due to the fact they can purchase food a lot cheaper than we can. Below is some info they provided me via email:

Quote:
Both cash and food donations are very valuable to Second Harvest. Food from food drives and collections is in high demand by our member agencies and the needy people they serve. That said, each dollar donated actually allows us to provide closer to 15 POUNDS of food. Here's how: Local food industry facilities offer us about 2 million pounds of food each year. Without money, we would be unable to fill our trucks with fuel to pick up those donations. We would be unable to heat our warehouse (to a balmy 55 degrees) in the winter or to keep the lights on, to power our phones and fax, or pay all the other attendant costs of distributing more than 4 million pounds of food each year. We do purchase small amounts of food at very good prices for some of our initiatives (especially "Backpack Buddies," a program that provides weekend food to kids. Each year, we need to raise about a half million dollars to make up the difference between the administrative fees we get from state and federal government to distribute tax-supported food and the small handling fees our agencies pay and what it actually costs us to do that distribution to our member agencies.

Keep in mind, we were close to being in the top 15 of cash donated Ice Bowls in 2008. Let's see what we can do in 2009.

Excellent point, Eddie!

The Ice Bowl has been going on for several decades now and disc golf volunteers and leaders everywhere have been trying to communicate the same over the years about cash donations versus pounds of food raised.

One Pennsylvania club leads all Ice Bowls nationwide every year with Most Pounds of Food Donated, and while that charity still goes a *very* long way, one wonders how much more effective their outreach would be if they could focus their efforts on raising money instead of food. I have debated broaching the subject with that club but in the end decided against it. Bottom line is that it's all still valuable alms which greatly help the needy and less fortunate.

I'm sure we speak of the same club that takes the cash and buy enough rice to last the charity for a year. However, the cash they bring in would probably put them near the top of that category. Hopefully they communicate with their said charity and both agree that the amount of food and the type will be useful to them and not just tossed to the side.

personally, I think that anything that any charity gets in these hard economic times should be good, be that cash or food donations, the fact that anyone is out there and not only willing but able to contribute should be applauded!

I will be at TYLER'S ICE BOWL on Saturday with a nice big food contribution for their charity, an effort that I started weeks ago, collecting food for their Ice Bowl.

Jeff, will you be at Tyler's Ice Bowl?
Lehigh Valley Ice Bowl's?
Hickory Run Ice Bowl?
just curious......

I'll be there Fred
I'm also hoping to see many of the good people from the LVDC

It will be one round of 27 holes. Andrew Sweetons Hot Dog Sundays will be provided along with mulled hot apple cider, so come out everyone and enjoy!

Here's some more info............
Fee: $25 (All Divisions) (bring 10 cans of food and save $5 off your Ticket Price)
Bring an additional 10 cans of food and receive a Mulligan!
Mulligans are also available for cash - $5 each or three for $10
Ace Pot - $1 extra

Please bring canned goods for the Food Banks – clean out your cupboards!

The 2008 Tyler Ice Bowl had the distinction of raising the most food of ALL 2008
Ice Bowls worldwide (4th Year running!) We raised 12,790 lbs of food for the Food
Banks!! Help us to once again be the leader in charitable giving – can we make it to
15,000 lbs of food in 2009???

Note: Everyone bringing 20lbs or more of food donations to the event, or paying a special
$10 guesstimate fee, will get one guess at determining the total weight collected. The
person coming closest to the actual number will win a DGA MachLite basket donated by
the “Canadian”!

For more info call Andrew Sweeton (609-683-6226) or Stephen Caffery (973-981-6377)
